At This Price, Why Stop At Getting Just One Kayak?
The Intex Challenger One-Person Kayak is perfect for a day out on a lazy river or a calm ocean. Inflated, it's 9 feet long, just big enough for one person to have a blast in the sun. The whole kayak weighs just under 24 lbs. It's easy to carry to the edge of the water from the car. The price is right for a great little kayak – well under$100.
This might be a small, cost conscious, just for fun kayak, but the pros seem to like it too. A sea worthy traveler said, "This is a good kayak... I have traveled long distances in conventional kayaks ranging from $2500 fiberglass ocean kayaks." She goes on to say that inflatable kayaks are better used for short distances and day trips instead of multi-day all-day trips. I think we can all agree on that.
The Intex Challenger comes with its own high output pump for quick action inflation. Inflating takes 3-5 minutes. It's super easy to manage this kayak right out of the box. One reviewer stated, "I'm a 71-year-old female. I don't need help; I inflate it myself... It takes me 3 minutes to inflate the kayak with the pump and a couple of more minutes to inflate the seat and foot cushion ballast, usually by mouth, although you can use the pump." Boston valves keep the air from leaking out when you don't want it to. You can control when you want the boat deflated.
When you are ready to call it a day, the deflation is just as easy. Wrapping up a day on the lake with your kayak takes 10-15 minutes’ total if you are one of those people who like to put everything back where it belongs. The kayak is about 3 feet long and 1 .5 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep when packed up for storage. Not too big to keep in the trunk!
It inflates in two sections and there is an inflatable beam on the floor that allows for increased stability in the water. Stability is a big deal in a little kayak. Some other kayaks tend to spin and flip when you paddle. The Intex Challenger is built for stability. When you sit inside the kayak, you sit low enough that it doesn’t feel like you have any chance of flipping over. It's possible to kneel inside as well, if you find that position more comfortable.
Once you are in the water, there is an optional rudder that you can use to steer the boat more precisely. The rudder is a fin that extends from the boat down deeper into the water- You can pull it up when the water is very shallow so you don't run aground. This rudder is particularly helpful on those windy days when you find yourself blowing along sideways. Just drop that rudder and you'll be all set.
The footrest is very comfortable, but if you find you don't like it, it's easily removed. There is also a removable seat as well that acts as a backrest. The seat is attached with both Velcro and clips on either side. One reviewer said they found the kayak so comfortable that they took a nap in it! We don't recommend that, since who know what kinds of shenanigans lake fish can get into while you snooze!
The cockpit is comfy, but it can also store a lot of stuff. Some users report that they fit two coolers into their cockpit and they just keep their legs out on the sides. It takes all kinds, and the Intex Challenger is ready for whatever you want to do. Feel free to bring your Intent Challenger along for a fishing trip. You'll be able to store your catch in the cockpit or floating along behind without any problem at all.
When you are seated, there is a cargo not directly in front of you. You can put extra clothing, sunblock, a snack, or other essentials right in that cargo area to keep handy. There are also grab cords on either side so you can tie two kayaks together, or simply drag it out of the water when you are done.
It's pretty common to see a fleet of little Intex Challenger kayaks on the river together. For the price, it makes sense to get one for each member of the family and a few for guests. One reviewer exclaims, "I'm going on my second year with this kayak and have used it dozens of times. Very durable and haven't had any trouble with it at all. I love fishing so I often take it out on lakes to do some kayak fishing and it serves my purposes well. Couldn't be happier with this kayak and have had many friends buy it as well after they saw mine." You might become the taste-maker among your friends when they all go out and buy one too!
Although most reviewers have claimed that their kayaks lasted months or years without punctures, sometimes these things do happen. The puncture kit that comes in the box is great. It can patch up a little hole or a bigger gash in no time. Once patched, your kayak is as good as new. The Intex Challenger Kayak is made of heavy-duty puncture resistant vinyl. You can find yourself in some sticky situations and still get away scott free.
One downside to the Intex Challenger Kayak is that its size may not fit all. This boat can support up to 220 lbs, which is a moderate sized man. Although some men topping out around 225 have reported no problems at all, larger people are going to have to go a size up. The Intex line of kayaks have larger versions to choose from.
An 86" two-sided paddle comes with your kayak. You can tuck the paddles under the cargo net when not in use, but do be careful. You don't want to find yourself up the creek without a paddle!
